Today’s Council meeting featured a refusal of the three-member Republican majority (Wheeler, Kenney & Prescott) to allow a vote to accept a $200,000 US Dept of Justice grant to coordinate efforts in NH’s cities to address gang violence and to reduce gun violence. The vote on the grant was tabled at Councilor Wheeler’s insistence that he “needed more information” even after Det. Barter from the Manchester Police Department explained that additional delays (Wheeler was allowed to table the grant vote on Jan 10th as well) might jeopardize Manchester’s ability to utilize the grant in time to reduce gang and gun violence this spring and summer. While the Attorney General was present, he failed to advocate for a timely vote. Hopefully, Councilor Pappas and I can shepherd this grant through the Council process at our next meeting, Feb. 7th.
